The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) from the beginning had to face many challenges from storage to digital in the vaccination drive for adults against the Covid 19 pandemic, states Dr. Sheela Jagtap who is the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) immunization officer.
“At the beginning when the drive started, the storage was the main problem, as the city of Mumbai only had a small cold storage facility at Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) F-South ward office in Parel, where they were being stored in the initial time. Then in April, another facility was opened in Kanjurmarg.
The vaccines both Covishield and Covaxin need to be stored at two to eight degrees Celsius. The facility opened in Kanjurmarg could store around 10 million vaccine doses,” stated Dr. Sheela Jagtap the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officer.
This activity of collecting data and entering information at this large scale at all digital approach was something that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials were not aware of earlier.
“A template was provided by the Centre to us to update all data like mobile numbers, Aadhar number, etc after which they were to be uploaded in the Cowin Portal. At a time 1000 beneficiaries could be registered. And even if a single mistake was there of a spelling, number it would completely reject to upload,” stated Jagtap stating the problems that had to go through.
She further stated that to improve and make the process smoother the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) appointed trainers in data uploading processes. After this, the beneficiaries were themselves able to upload their details. Ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections 2022, the civic body looks forward to vaccinating every person, they now hope to reach out to the last vaccinated person by house-to-house vaccination drive.
