Maharashtra Assembly extends the time limit for Joint Committee on Shakti Bill
The time limit for Joint Committee on Shakti Bill has been extended till the last day of the next Assembly session. The final draft of the Shakti Bill is being made by the committee, and it constitutes 21 members in total from all parties 14 members from the Lower House and seven from the Upper House. 
 
Shakti Bill a law that is intended to curb crime against women and children has been bought in by the Maharashtra government. It is expected that is a law with tougher punishments for those who indulge in crimes against children and women. It is a law that has run into controversy for multiple aspects that was tabled in the Maharashtra Assembly in December.
 
This bill proposes the death penalty, steep fines waves for a speedy probe, and a speedy trial with quick judgment in such cases but there was a bit of opposition. More than 30 women organizations and 70 activists had written to Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray against the state’s new bill on sexual crimes against women and children. 
 
The advice of the general public was invited by the Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh also the Chairman of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly and Council in January. The Shakti Bill was devised on lines of Andhra Pradesh’s Disha Act. Under the Disha Act, severe punishment for crimes done against women allowing the death penalty for rape and minimizing the judgment period in such cases to 21 working days. This bill was passed on the first day of the two-day special Assembly Session.
