BMC: Work of Shifting Surplus water from Vihar Lake will be concluded in 2022
A study is being done by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on how to shift the surplus water from Vihar Lake to either Bhandup Water Treatment plant or Airoli Creek during the time of Monsoon as when the Vihar Lake is overflowed it leads to release water in the Mithi River, which sets off the rise in its level during monsoon.

Last year in November, a consultant was hired to study the suitability of the project by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The Municipal Officials stated that the people who have been assigned with the work are studying the rainfall patterns, the amount of water that needs to be shifted through the tunnel, and appropriate sites for releasing the water.

“The study will be an element in the way the climate changes, as just in a short period a high-intensity rainfall is noticed which is a continuing phenomenon. As of now, we are unaware that how much water will be released into the Mithi when Vihar will start overflowing. It becomes of utmost importance to study the rain pattern so that the project is shaped accurately,” stated a senior official from the Storm Water Drain Department.

Further, he added, “The whole study will be concluded till 2022, and whatever the results will be, based on it the work will resume.” Mithi River crossed the danger mark this year two times which took place last week. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) with due care took out more than 200 people from Kranti Nagar, located on the bank of the river, to safety.
