BMC prepared plan for 3 lakes plagued by sewage discharge
To prevent sewage discharge, a major source of pollution into the three water bodies the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has put forward to rejuvenate the Sion Talao and Sheetal Talao in Kurla and Digeshwar Talao in Charkop. A consultant will be appointed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) under this project which is amounted to Rs 1 crore.

The consultant will be providing and submitting a report on measures to stop the discharge of sewage and dirty water from drains into these lakes in the time frame of one year immediately within one year after a work order is issued. The feasibility of treating sewage water before it is discharged in the lakes will also be checked by the consultant.

The Standing Committee will be approving the appointment of the consultant. “Earlier, these lakes were used as a source of drinking water but after the dams were built and drinking water was brought through taps, they were abandoned and slowly encroached. Out of these many lakes have been disappeared due to the rapid urbanization development,” stated an official from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in the past had taken all the beautification work of these lakes but the work mainly contained concretization and hardly anything was done to clean or prevent sewage flow into the lakes. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was fined by National Green Tribunal (NGT) in 2020, for not taking necessary steps to minimize the pollution in water bodies. They also directed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to make sure that a plan is made to treat the sewage before it is discharged into these water bodies.
