On Saturday, the State Election Commission (SEC) will provide its findings on the public's comments and objections to the proposed electoral ward delimitations committee. The elected BMC house's term will end on March 7. Following that, the state government stated its intention to appoint an administrator to run the
BMC until a new mayor is elected.
The State Election Commission accepted the BMC's initial draught on ward demarcation in Mumbai in December 2021. The SEC also agreed to expand the number of wards from 227 to 236. The BMC administration has requested views and complaints on the electoral ward boundaries after obtaining permission from the Commission.
The BMC had received 893 recommendations and objections from the public as of February 14th. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has formed a high-level committee to consider the proposals and complaints. Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal, Konkan Divisional Commissioner, Additional Commissioner of Finance Department, and two Mumbai Collectors make up the Committee.
On February 22 and 23, roughly 600 residents presented their grievances to the committee in the Y.B. Chavan auditorium, while 350 citizens were absent on the hearing date. The Committee was then expected to submit its report to the SEC on March 2, but the SEC extended the deadline and asked it to deliver it by March 5.
The SEC is anticipated to conduct a lottery draw reserving specific wards for SC/ST after receiving the committee report on suggestions and objections, as per process. However, the Commission is awaiting the Supreme Court's final judgement on the OBC quota, which is expected on Thursday. However, the BMC has begun revising voter registration lists. "The committee will submit its report on Saturday, and we've already begun revising voter rolls." a top BMC executive stated
