The Omicron variation was found in 21 of the 23 persons who died from SARS-CoV-2 this year, while the other two were infected with different subtypes, according to the
BMC's ninth genome sequencing report released on Monday. The batch included 282 samples, which were delivered to Kasturba Hospital's Next Generation Genome Sequencing Lab.
After 95% of the samples were forwarded to Kasturba Hospital's laboratory for genome sequencing, the study revealed that the Omicron variation continued to rule over Mumbaikars. "Their samples were sent for genome sequencing, which revealed that they had the Omicron variation, which caused 21 people to succumb to Covid-19."
Furthermore, 22 persons died within seven days of the beginning of symptoms, and one died within seven days of the onset of symptoms. "However, 15 of the 23 were unvaccinated," said Suresh Kakani, BMC's assistant municipal commissioner. The Omicron variation was discovered in 190 of the total samples, whereas Delta and its variants were detected in the remaining samples.
"The report shows that Omicron has completely surpassed Delta, and it is having catastrophic consequences for senior individuals," he stated. Citizens should not be negligent in maintaining covid preventative behaviour, according to senior health officials, because the threat of covid virus has not yet been averted.
