The Maharashtra government published advice on fire prevention measures on Monday, following five major fires and over 55 deaths in hospitals during the present pandemic. Roshani Kadam-Patil, the Public Health Department's undersecretary, issued the government resolution.
According to the recommendations, fire extinguishers must be erected and refilled in hospitals under the authority of the Public Health Department, and they must be installed in locations where they may be conveniently removed and deployed in the event of a fire.
Following receipt of the fire audit report, these hospitals must install fire extinguishing devices, provide quarterly training to all personnel through mock drills, and ensure that all exit doors and routes are clear and unobstructed. During mock drills, officers from the fire department and disaster management are required to participate.
Hospitals would be required to prominently display information on fire department manpower, trained people, and a disaster management cell at the entrance. Furthermore, hospitals will be required to post signs stating that lifts should not be used in the event of a fire.
The government's rules are crucial because the investigation into the fires indicated that hospitals lacked effective firefighting equipment, and in some cases, workers were not properly educated to use them. Furthermore, it was discovered that the majority of hospitals did not conduct periodic fire and safety audits and that some of them failed to modernise and reinforce their firefighting systems as a result.
Furthermore, senior Public Health Department officials stated that in some situations, hospital upgrades have been delayed due to timely action by the Public Work Department. "Both the Public Health Department and the hospital management must pursue the subject with the PWD regularly. 'It takes time,' he acknowledged.
