On Wednesday, Maharashtra Congress President Nana Patole lashed out at the Centre over rising petrol costs, saying it was a direct attack on the purses of ordinary people. He told reporters here that there was no increase in gasoline prices throughout the campaign for the recently finished Assembly elections in five states, but that post-election rates of petrol and diesel are increasing every day.

Despite rising worldwide crude oil prices for several years, the Congress-led UPA government had managed to keep fuel prices in the country under control, according to the Congress MLA. He claimed that the Centre is "stealing" from ordinary people's purses by regularly raising fuel and diesel prices.

When asked about the BJP's excellent success in the recently concluded Assembly elections, in which the saffron party regained power in four states, the Congress leader hinted that such poll results may not last long, saying that "a flame emits more light when it is close to going out."

When asked about hostile witnesses in the 2008 Malegaon bomb blast case, he responded it was nothing new. "This is a legal matter, and I'm not going to discuss it. However, people are becoming more skeptical of the court nowadays, which is harmful to democracy. Why is there one law for Param Bir Singh (a suspended IPS officer facing extortion charges) and another for Anil Deshmukh (a former state home minister currently serving a prison sentence for money laundering)? "He inquired.
