Citizens must immerse non-community Ganesha idols made of Plaster of Paris (PoP) in artificial lakes, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). To encourage people to reduce pollution, the civic body plans to increase the number of artificial lakes to 100. The assistant commissioners of the city's 24 administrative wards have been directed to conduct a review and make plans for 3 to 4 artificial lakes in each ward.

The BMC has declared that PoP idols will be prohibited in the city during the Ganesha festival in 2023. It has also made mentioning 'PoP' on these idols mandatory so that they can be identified during immersion. The civic body has also requested that non-community idols do not exceed two feet in height and that public pandal idols be as low as possible in height. A single-window system is being used to grant permission to erect Ganesha pandals throughout the city.

Every year, approximately two lakh non-community idols are worshipped in the city. Over the last few years, citizens have responded positively to the BMC's concept of artificial lakes. As a result, the Municipal Government will increase the number of artificial lakes this year.
