With the start of BMC's crucial monsoon operations this year, news of migrant workers planning to return to their hometowns for fear of a lockdown has begun to haunt civilian rule.  The Civil Body is already working on a backup plan, reminding the Mumbai Civil Body of the immigration impact that has affected many of the existing infrastructure projects in the city.

Between March 2020 and April 2020, several BMC workers left the city last year.  Road and desalting jobs were the worst affected, officials said.   Senior civic officials said there had been a shortage of workers since the lockdown last year and somehow managed to start emergency monsoon infrastructure work with 2,500 workers in the first week of April.  The number of workers gradually rose to 4,182 later.

Through their efforts, BMC began implementing 446 works on roads, bridges, coastal roads and water network repairs.  Each farm had an average of 9 workers to unload the main nuggets, and the sewer work on the roadside was badly affected by the labour shortage.  Unable to float tenders for drainage cleaning, BMC then allowed desalting work to various NGOs.  Fearing that a similar situation would affect the work this year, the Civil Body has already instructed the contractors to take care of the workers with confidence and take care of them.  Pre-monsoon activities are held in Mumbai during the months of April and May every year.  In addition to the various departments, BMC is in a hurry to complete repairs to low-lying roads, sanitation and water systems in May or earlier.  Currently, the Mumbai Coastal Road Project and the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project are in progress.

Many workers are hired on the basis of pest control work.  Aspirational projects such as the Coastal Road were also affected last year as more than a hundred workers left the city.  Large-scale monsoon activities are underway in Mumbai.

These actions need to be completed on time.  Therefore, instructions have been issued to the concerned contractors to take proper care of the workers doing these jobs.  All work is going smoothly and now, we are afraid of labour shortages later,”said a senior BMC official.
