Tender for penguin enclosure to be reviewed by BMC

Soon after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) faced opposition from the corporators, the civic body has concluded to review the Rs 15 crores tender for maintenance of a popular penguin enclosure at the Byculla zoo for the next three years. In October, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had extended the period of agency for the second time. This extended proposal will be tabled before the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) civic standing committee for information today. 

 

The contract was given to M/S Highway Construction for a sum of 11.5 crores in September 2018 for three years to keep a check on the penguin enclosure. Soon after the contract was expired on September 30th this year, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) then extended the contract for 43 days which started from October 1st worth 45 lakhs, which again ended on November 12th. Now the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has given one more extension to the agency until a new contractor is shortlisted and appointed. 

 

“The earlier maintenance contract had expired and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was going to award an extension due to the three-year tender being delayed after it showed opposition of corporators, so the contract will have to be extended until the new contractor is appointed. For proper maintenance of penguins, it is very important. 

 

In August this year, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had floated a tender to keep the penguins and their enclosure at Byculla zoo for the next 36 months, which was estimated at 15.26 crores. But the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had alleged that the applied cost was inflated and asked the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to create an in-house management system to keep a check on the penguin’s enclosure.
