Supreme Court praises BMC for handling Covid-19 situation

Mumbai: The Supreme Court has lauded the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for handling the Covid-19 situation in Mumbai, amid a major medical oxygen crisis in the country.  This comes against the backdrop of a decline in the daily corona virus cases of financial capital.  The Bombay Municipal Corporation has done some remarkable work without showing disrespect to Delhi, but we can see what BMC has done,”Justice Chandrachud said.

He asked BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal to gain experience and create oxygen storage tanks in the national capital with the Center and the Health Secretary to the Government of Delhi. The apex court was hearing a defamation suit filed by the Delhi High Court against central government officials for failing to comply with a directive to provide 700 metric tonnes of medical grade oxygen to Covid-19 patients in the national capital.  A bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and MR Shah said the High Court would not be barred from monitoring issues related to Covid-19 management. 

The apex court said the April 30 order could not be reconsidered and the Center needed it.  Inch by inch to supply 700 metric tons of oxygen per day to Delhi.  He asked the central government to prepare a plan by Thursday morning on how to revise the supply to 700 metric tonnes. The apex court said in a two-hour long hearing that imprisoning officials was not going to bring oxygen to Delhi.  

The Center was questioned about the supply to the national capital from May 3.  It was only after the Delhi High Court issued a show cause notice to the Center on Tuesday after hearing arguments alleging misuse of the Covid-19 crisis in the national capital.  Officials in the national capital sought the personal form of non-compliance with instructions for the delivery of oxygen for the treatment of Covid-19 patients.
