As the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections 2022 are around the corner, the civic body in its move has held a day-long health check-up camp and workshop for the transgender community in the city of Mumbai to check if any issues like hypertension, diabetes, obesity and other.

As per the information released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) public health department it was the need of the hour as many transgenders were immune-compromised and were at a greater risk of infection. This initiative of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was appreciated by Priya Patil who is a member of Kinnar Maa Trust.

“This is a very positive initiative that has been taken by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) which will help in bringing about a positive change among our community, especially issues related to mental health. In total there are around 70,000 to 80,000 transgender persons in the city of Mumbai and the suburbs and out of them majority suffers from lifestyle diseases or illness which occurs due to depression,” stated Priya Patil, Member of Kinnar Maa Trust.

She further stated that there are many from our community who have this stigma of being transgender and that’s what affects the mental health causing depression and then falling into many addictions. The community was being addressed by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Suresh Kakani who spoke about infectious diseases, doing jobs that do not harm the body and time check-ups to the Transgender community. Further, he stated that people do have misconceptions about their health which leads to overthinking and then mental illness.
