The BMC has authorized 24,638 compensation claims from relatives of patients who died as a result of Covid-19, but just about 10% (2,216) have received financial assistance of Rs 50,000. The BMC was inundated with petitions after the state government promised an ex-gratia payment of Rs 50,000 to the families of individuals who died as a result of the infection.

According to Assistant Municipal Commissioner Suresh Kakani, who is also the head of the BMC's crisis management department, the BMC received 38,887 applications until April 13, of which 24,638 were granted. While 16,767 claims originated in Mumbai and 7,871 from elsewhere. A total of 13,602 applications were turned down. 5,431 applicants filed a grievance with the Grievance Redress Committee (GRC), requesting a review of the BMC's denial of their claims.

In February 2022, former Mayor Kishori Pednekar convened a GRC meeting at Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan with BMC officers. After reviewing all applicable documents, the committee either approves or rejects ex-gratia claims. The committee approved compensation for 373 applicants who presented their claims to the committee. Only 2,216 payments had been made as of April 13th.

Mumbai is responsible for 2,109 of the 2,216 payments. Applicants complain to the BMC because they applied to the civic body, but the money is disbursed by the state government, according to a BMC employee. However, Aseem Gupta, the State Disaster Management's Principal Secretary, said that 90% of payments had been made to accepted applicants.

"We made payment by linking their Aadhaar IDs in some circumstances when bank account details were incorrect," he said. According to sources in the State Government's Relief and Rehabilitation Department, applicants are not accurately filling out bank details, causing the process to be delayed.
