The new electoral ward boundaries and reservations, which were announced on Monday, have created a chaos in political parties owing to almost all existing ward boundaries being changed. This means that top political big wigs have not retained their wards and will now have to search for another territory. On top of it, there is the SC, ST, OBC and Women reservations math which is also to be taken care off.

Some of the setbacks which have been received due to the reservation are

Two time Bandra corporator Asif Zakaria’s ward has been reserved for women OBC candidate
MNS corporator Rais Shaikh’s ward has been reserved for women SC candidate
MNS corporator Sandeep Deshpande’s ward has been reserved for women (along with neighbouring wards being reserved for women as well)
NCP group leader Dhananjay Pisal’s ward has been reserved for women
Some of the major leaders in BMC facing the issue of contesting from new wards owing to redrawn boundaries are

Mayor Snehal Ambekar’s ward has been broken into two parts with one part being reserved for SC candidate.
MNS Corporator Manish Chavan’s ward has been divided into three parts while his neighbouring wards have been reserved for women.
Congress corporator Pravin Chheda’s ward has got divided into four parts of which two are unreserved and open.

This has really upset the calculations of several parties and their leaders. For Dhanajay Pisal, he has a choice to make his wife contest (owing to his ward being reserved for women). The case of Rais Shaikh is not a good one as his ward has turned into a women ward and the other wards around Govandi as well has turned into women ward.

The delimitation and reservation will pose challenges for all parties. For those looking to accommodate sitting corporators in other wards, it will not be an easy task as local aspirants will raise the banner of revolt if their turf is encroached upon.

Now, the draft list of wards will be published on October 5 and suggestions/o bjections sought from citizens till October 20. By November 18, the SEC will take the final decision. The BMC chief will publish the list and the map on November 22.
