On Thursday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi made serious allegations against the Election Commission, claiming that its refusal to provide a machine-readable voter list led the Opposition to suspect that the poll body had acted in coordination with the BJP to manipulate the Maharashtra election results. Rahul Gandhi pointed to a sudden and significant increase in the number of registered voters, along with an unexpected surge in turnout late in the day. As the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, he argued that these developments raised major concerns about the transparency and fairness of the election process.

“In just five months, more voters were added in Maharashtra than in the past five years. This immediately raised our concerns,” said Rahul Gandhi. “And after 5 pm on polling day, there was a huge spike in voter turnout, which made the numbers appear questionable.” He further highlighted the disparity between the Vidhan Sabha and Lok Sabha results. “In the Assembly elections, our alliance was completely defeated, yet in the general elections, we secured a sweeping win. This contrast is hard to ignore,” he remarked.

Rahul Gandhi claimed that nearly one crore new voters were registered between the Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha polls. “We discovered that one crore additional voters came into the system during this period. We took the matter to the Election Commission and expressed our concern that the election in Maharashtra was tampered with.”  One of the most troubling aspects, according to Rahul Gandhi, was the Commission's unwillingness to share the updated voter list. “The voter list belongs to the people of India, yet the Election Commission refuses to give it to us. That in itself is a serious issue,” he said.

Rahul Gandhi also raised alarm over the Election Commission's alleged intention to delete surveillance footage from polling day. He described this move as suspicious. “They said they planned to destroy the CCTV footage. This was shocking because there were already questions being raised about the sudden rise in voting after 5:30 pm. For the numbers to align, there had to be a surge, but our ground reports told a different story,” he explained.

According to Congress workers on the ground, no such large-scale voting took place in polling stations after 5:30 pm. “Our local teams confirmed that there was no significant increase in voting during that time,” Rahul Gandhi added. Based on these factors, Rahul Gandhi stated that the Opposition has strong reasons to believe that the Election Commission worked in tandem with the BJP to influence the Maharashtra election outcome.

“These two elements—the voter list being withheld and the plan to erase CCTV footage—have led us to the conclusion that the Election Commission may have colluded with the ruling party to distort the election process,” Rahul Gandhi concluded.
