Begin delimitation process of electoral ward boundaries: State Election Commission directs civic bodies
Directions to 18 municipal corporations including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was given by the State Election Commission (SEC) on Wednesday to begin with the delimitation process of the electoral ward boundaries as the civic polls approach. Preparation to which has been asked to begin from 27th August, Friday. The elections will be held in February next year that is in 2022 as the term of the present elected body of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will end on March 7, 2022. The period of 17 other corporations will also be ending next year.

The situation of pandemic prevailed in the state, due to which the census process did not take place in 2021, after which the election commission has asked the corporations to go with the 2011 census data for delimitation of ward boundaries based on population, updating the list of voters according to the wards, which wards are to be included and which are to be excluded from some areas based on a change in geography due to redevelopment, and infrastructure developments such as the construction of new roads and bridges.

“All the work related to the process of preparation of draft ward boundaries will be done by the corporation and then will be sent to the state elections body for permission. According to the process, the draft ward boundaries will be published which will also invite the suggestion and objections of people. After the suggestions are made, a final list will be published,” stated an official from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) department. The city of Mumbai consists of 227 electoral wards.

The State Election Body has directed the corporations to make a committee with the municipal commissioner being chairman, with two planners and some other officials who are aware of the city so that they can be of help in the preparation of ward boundaries. The State Election Commission (SEC) on May 31 had asked the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to begin with the preliminary preparation for the upcoming polls.
