BMC Election 2022
With the BMC election scheduled to be held in February 2017,the main opposition party in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) – Congress party appointed Ghatkopar sitting corporator Pravin Chheda as the new opposition leader in the BMC.

He was appointed in place of  Andheri corporator Devendra Amberkar, who had been in the post since the last three years. Pravin Chheda, who is a four-time corporator was with the BJP until he quit and joined the congress just before the 2012 BMC elections. He was elected from Ghatkopar ward no 124.

Mumbai Congress chief Sanjay Nirupam maintained that the party wanted someone “more aggressive” to fight against corruption and hence decided to replace Amberkar.

Chhedha, the party’s Gujarati face is one of the only prominent Gujarati leaders in the Congress and his elevation as opposition leader is being seen as the party’s bid to neutralize the Gujarati factor which is in the BJP’s favour.
