The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Musalmeen (MIM) has been deregistered in Maharashtra and will not be eligible to contest in next year’s Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) election to be held in February 2017.

The state election commission (SEC) on Wednesday deregistered 191 unrecognized parties, including MIM which was hoping to make inroads in the BMC, Ulhasnagar and Thane civic corporations, all of which go to the polls in 2017.The political parties were deregistered as they had not submitted audited accounts and income tax returns to the state election commission.

MIM president Asaduddin Owaisi admitted “there have been lapses on our part”.Speaking to TOI over phone, Owaisi said, “We have requested the SEC to condone the lapses but it appears it is too late. We have written to the commission. We will appeal.”
