Mumbai: Open spaces in Mankhurd and Shivaji Nagar are all set for facelift
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is all set for the development project in the open spaces of Mankhurd and Shivaji Nagar ahead of the upcoming municipal elections. A plan has been put forward by the local representatives of beautifying the open spaces by installing statues of those personalities who have worked for the progress of Muslims in the state of Maharashtra.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officers stated that if such beautification work is done then there will be less chance of encroachments on these open spaces. “We have kept some areas in the list between Govandi, Mankhurd and Shivaji Nagar areas. These areas are more likely to get encroached by illegal slum dwellers,” stated a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) official.

Local Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Azmi is leading this project with an estimated cost of Rs 1 core. "Our main objective behind this project is making people aware about education and empowerment of women. Personalities who have supported Savitribai Phule and Jyotiba Phule their statues will be constructed in these spaces along with the statues with of personalities like Syed Ahmed Khan who contributed towards building the nation,” Azmi stated.

He further stated that with the setting up of statues landscaping work will also be taking place in the open spaces. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation stated that as the civic elections approach, they have received more than 20 proposals from local corporator for carrying out the beautification works in the open space.
