Mumbai Marks 79th Independence Day with Patriotic Zeal at BMC Headquarters
Mumbai’s Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) commemorated the 79th anniversary of India’s Independence on Friday with a grand flag-hoisting ceremony at its historic headquarters. Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Bhushan Gagrani unfurled the national tricolour, extending heartfelt wishes to the citizens of Mumbai on the occasion.

The ceremony witnessed the presence of senior civic officials, including Additional Municipal Commissioners Ashwini Joshi, Amit Saini, and Abhijeet Bangar, along with department heads, staff, and local residents. The celebrations began with floral tributes to legendary civic leader Pherozeshah Mehta at his statue outside the iconic BMC building. This was followed by a garland being placed on the portrait of former Mayor Vasudev Balakrishna Varalikar in the Mayor’s office, marking respect for the city’s leaders who shaped its civic history.

The Mumbai Fire Brigade, along with the BMC’s security personnel, presented a formal guard of honour. Addressing the gathering afterward, Commissioner Gagrani spoke passionately about the idea of a “New India” — a nation ready to protect its sovereignty and strengthen its global standing. Referring to the recent Operation Sindoor, he noted that the mission had provided India with renewed recognition on the international stage. He called upon citizens to pledge their commitment to safeguarding this strength while also expressing gratitude for the constant faith and support shown by Mumbai’s residents in the civic administration.

The day also served as a moment of recognition for bravery and service. Three Mumbai Fire Brigade officials — Senior Station Officer Santosh Ingole and firemen Sunil Desale and Yogesh Kondawar — were honoured for receiving the prestigious President’s Medal for Meritorious Service. Commissioner Gagrani felicitated them with floral bouquets, applauding their dedication and courage in safeguarding the city.

As part of the Independence Day programme, the BMC unveiled its Annual Publication 2025, continuing a long-standing tradition upheld by the Secretary Department. The publication serves as a record of the civic body’s initiatives and achievements over the past year.

Parallel celebrations also unfolded at Mantralaya, where Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis hoisted the tricolour. In his address, he declared that “no one can stop India’s progress,” underscoring Maharashtra’s pivotal role in driving the nation’s growth trajectory. Paying tribute to freedom fighters, martyrs, and soldiers, Fadnavis emphasized the sacrifices that form the foundation of India’s independence.
Highlighting the achievements of the nation’s armed forces, Fadnavis recalled Operation Sindoor, noting how the Indian military decisively struck terrorist and military bases across the border, showcasing New India’s strength to the world.

The Chief Minister also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, crediting him for India’s rapid rise in the global economy. “Under Modi ji’s guidance, India has advanced from the 11th position to become the world’s 4th largest economy,” he remarked, adding that Maharashtra is making significant strides to align with this vision of growth.
With the tricolour waving proudly at both BMC headquarters and Mantralaya, Mumbai’s Independence Day celebrations stood as a reminder of the city’s resilience, India’s progress, and the collective spirit that binds its people.
