Days after a 42-year-old woman was gang-raped in Kurla, the deputy chairperson of the Maharashtra Legislative Council, Ms. Neelam Gorhe, made a compelling case on Monday for the implementation of the Shakti Act, which calls for the death penalty in rape cases, a 30-day investigation period starting on the day the complaint is filed and puts the onus on social media platforms and Internet data providers to share information for the police investigation.

Ms. Gorhe, who met with the zonal commissioner of police Mr. Manoj Patil and spoke on the phone with Dr. Dolas, dean of the Bhabha Hospital, about the  victim's liver reports, recommended that the state government pursue early approval from the Centre for the Shakti Act, which has been sent for the President's assent after being passed by the state legislature in December last year.

The zone 5 Deputy Commissioner of Police, Manoj Patil, has informed that the police have recorded the victim's statement by incorporating necessary charges, Ms. Gorhe said in a statement to the Free Press Journal. After the medical examination is finished, the police will think about filing additional charges. Patil has promised that the offenders will face harsh punishment.

Ms. Gorhe has recommended to the Deputy Commissioner that a counsellor be hired to help the stated woman's confidence. "The police should take strict action in regards to crimes committed within their jurisdiction's zone limitations and accused individuals who have been released on bail." In order to prevent abducted girls from falling back into the same cycle, cyber literacy instruction should be given to them once the police have located them and have reintegrated them into society.

For cases where drug offences against women are reported, she suggested creating a separate register. Additionally, Ms. Gorhe advocated for the regular holding of Beat-level Mahila Mohalla Vigilance Committee meetings. Additionally, the Deputy Commissioner of Police was given instructions to review the cases in which the B Summary Report has been filed. According to Patil, such actions will be taken throughout the entire zone," Ms. Gorhe said.
