The NCP and Congress are now definitely not going together for the Mumbai civic body elections, with the former going ahead and announcing its first list of 45 candidates for the election scheduled to be held on February 2017.

The Sharad Pawar-led party announced its first list of 45 candidates in a press conference in Mumbai on Thursday. The NCP has 14 members in the preset house of 227 members.

“There was no proposal of an alliance from the Congress as yet. So, we have decided to go ahead with announcing our first list of candidates. We have discussed the list with our president Sharad Pawar,” said Nawab Malik, Spokesperson of the party.

NCP Mumbai president Sachin Ahir said that the NCP will show its strength in the upcoming BMC polls.

“We have a good network of workers in Mumbai. I hope Nirupam stays firm on his statement till the next Lok Sabha elections,” quipped Ahir.

Reacting to the NCP’s decision of announcing the list of candidates, Nirupam downplayed the move. “We had already made it clear that we will not have any alliance for the BMC elections. We were partners with the NCP till 2014 election but now we are not in any alliance. It will not have much impact on our votes as the Congress has got its fixed voters,” said Nirupam.
