On Friday, the Maharashtra government will inform the Bombay High Court whether it is willing to make a statement in the FIR lodged in Dhule against Union Minister Narayan Rane for uttering derogatory remarks about Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray that it will not take coercive action against him.

Justices PB Varale and SM Modak questioned extra public prosecutor Jayesh Yagnik if the government was willing to make the same statement in the application to quash the FIR against him in Nashik for the same remarks that it had made in the plea to dismiss the FIR against him in Mumbai.

Six FIRs have been filed in Mahad, Nashik, Pune, Thane, Jalgaon and Ahmednagar in relation to Rane's contentious remarks at a news conference. He had gone to the HC to have the six FIRs quashed. The Supreme Court had refused to grant a blanket stay in all of his cases, instead directing him to file individual applications.

On Thursday, the HC heard Rane's request to have the FIR registered in Dhule quashed. "We have political rights, there is a democracy, there are differing points of view, there may be differing ideologies, even 360 degrees apart," Justice Varale remarked while urging the government to consider issuing a statement of no coercion.

The judges even instructed Rane's lawyers, Satish Maneshinde, a senior advocate and Aniket Sukma, an advocate, to ask the minister to come forward and put the matter to rest. "Why doesn't the petitioner (Rane) come up in court and say, 'Let bygones be bygones?'" Let us resolve to treat everyone with respect. "Let us not send the incorrect message to the people," Justice Varale stated.

Words were exchanged on both sides, according to Maneshinde. Maneshinde said the petitions (seeking the quashing of Nashik and Dhule FIRs) came from the same action and asked the court to provide relief in this case as well. In response to a court question, Yagnik stated that he had not received any orders to make a comparable statement. The HC has requested that the government consider making the statement and has scheduled a hearing for Friday.
