The figures from the major survey in the maximum city civic body have been released amid concerns about Delta and Delta Plus variants and the speculation that whether these vaccines will work against them. A survey of 2.9 lakh Covid patients shows that only 26 people out of these had got both doses of the Covid vaccine. Out of these 10,500 people had received only the first dose. This survey conducted during the second wave shows that 2 shots of vaccine are extremely effective against Covid-19.
Between January 2021 to June 17, 2021, 3,95,427 people tested positive for Covid in Mumbai. Out of this 2.9 lakh, patients were in-home quarantine and were included in the survey. Amongst the 2.9 lakh people infected with Covid, 10,500 had received the first dose. Around 100,000 hospitalized patients were not included in the survey and that data is still being collated. Data on Covid fatalities after the receipt of both vaccines are also still being studied.
“People who have taken the first dose of the vaccine have moderate infection to mild infection but those who have taken both doses have only experienced mild infection and very few of them needed ICU or Ventilators. So, if you look at the figure of deaths in the second wave the deaths in younger age groups were higher” said Vishwas Shankarwar, Deputy Municipal Commissioner.
The
BMC Survey is yet to add data from Mumbai Hospitals. Major Hospitals like Fortis Hospital and Bhatia Hospital states that amongst patients who have taken both doses of the Covid vaccine, they have no patients who require ICU care or ventilators.
“The Survey Data is also visible in our hospitals. There is no double dose received patient in the ICU at Fortis Hospitals. There were about 6-7 patients who had taken one dose of the vaccine and tested positive for Covid and had to be admitted to the ICU.
Some of them were also on Ventilators, but all had and have been discharged” stated Dr. Rahul Pandit, Director Critical Care, Fortis Hospitals, and Mumbai. “We have seen a similar figure in our hospital where less than 1% of the number of patients are those who have taken both doses. Almost 1% of the patients are those who have taken a single dose. The number of unvaccinated patients is more than 98%” said Dr. Rajeev Boudhankar, CEO, Bhatia Hospital.
However, only 6.84% of Mumbai's population had been vaccinated with both doses till June 17 this year. The BMC says if such surveys are conducted across the country at a central level the efficacy of the vaccines will be absolutely clear.
