In the last 24 hours, there has been a slight decrease in the number of daily covid cases across Mumbai and Maharashtra. On Friday, the city reported 2,255 new cases and two Covid-19 deaths, bringing the total number to 10,90,503, with 19,580 fatalities to date. After four months, it is the second-highest single-day case reported. Meanwhile, the doubling rate has fallen to 399 days, while the weekly growth rate has risen to 0.170%.

"In the city, two deaths have been reported." An 86-year-old man with hypertension and a heart condition. "57-year-old female with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome and Lung Cancer," a doctor said. In the last 24 hours, Maharashtra has reported 4,165 new infections and three covid fatalities, bringing the state's total to 79,27,862, with 1,47,833 deaths. Furthermore, the number of active cases in the state has surpassed 20,000.

According to Dr. Rahul Pandit, a member of the National Covid-19 Taskforce, there are several reasons for the increase in covid cases, particularly people who do not practise covid-appropriate behaviour, which causes the virus to spread. "The main reason for the surge is that the virus has a resurgence and retreat pattern." Furthermore, for the past several months, people have not taken the necessary precautions to prevent transmission.

As a result, we are seeing an increase in the number of cases in a few districts and cities throughout Maharashtra. Furthermore, there will be an increase in cases over the next three to four weeks," he predicted. According to Dr. Ishwar Gilada, Consultant in Infectious Diseases and Secretary-General of the Organised Medicine Academic Guild -OMAG, the current surge in Covid-19 cases globally as well as in a few pockets of India appears to be due to waning immunity - both natural immunity due to past infection or due to vaccine, it can be an immune escape as newer variants and sub-variants are known for immune escape, the higher gap in second and third dose, lack of clarity in "Well, this could be the start of a new wave of Covid-19, as Maharashtra, Kerala, and Delhi have been leading the show in Covid surges for the past 28 months." BA.4 and BA.5 have a marginally higher replication rate (R0).

Even if the numbers end up being slightly higher, resulting in a higher number of deaths, it is still less than 0.1 percent. When compared to other countries, India is far superior. The United States, Taiwan, North Korea, Brazil, and Germany account for more than half of all weekly cases worldwide. France, Italy, the United Kingdom, and Australia have high numbers," he said.
