For the past few years, the Hindmata and Gandhi Market areas have experienced flooding and water logging, which has caused a number of stores to become submerged. By taking steps like building underground water tanks beneath Xavier's Grounds and Pramod Mahajan Udyan and installing a pumping station, the BMC claims to have been successful in addressing the issue.
P Velarasu, a second Municipal Commissioner (Project), paid a visit to Hindamata and the Gandhi Market neighbourhood on Thursday. According to BMC, in order to prevent flooding at Gandhi Market, its engineers conducted a thorough study on the Gandhi Market's stormwater drainage system's dimensions, their invert level, the Brimstowad plan, and the current pumping capacity, and the times of the low and high tide.
After taking all of these things into account, the BMC built a small pumping station. In order to transport water, it has also built a chamber and installed a 1,200-mm rising pipeline. To ensure the easy flow of water into the chamber, additional iron nets have been laid on both sides of the roads. Additionally, pumps have been installed at the culverts beneath the railways in Bharat Nagar, Avanti Apartments, and Shanmukhanand. Three lakh litres of water can now be removed per minute as a result.
Similar to this, the
BMC built two underground water tanks in Hindmata, one at Pramod Mahajan Udyan (1.62 crore litres), and the other beneath Xavier's ground (1.05 crore litres). The BMC has also installed 15 pumps for water suction. The civic body also undertook work to extend two water tanks, adding a 1.81-million-gallon tank in addition to the current Xavier's ground tank and a 1.99-million-gallon tank in addition to the current Pramod Mahajan Udyan tanks. After the heavy rains stop, the water from these water tanks will be transported to the sea.
