Mumbai plans to make Railway stations more disable-friendly
Ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections 2022, the city’s suburban railway station is all set to be disabled-friendly. In a recent step, the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) which is a joint venture of the Maharashtra government and the Indian Railways has started a technical assistance study in a way for betterment access for the people with disabilities.

These various amenities include adding up wheel chair facilities on railway stations, making ramps for them so no difficulty is noticed, ramps on the entrances and washrooms and also forming wheelchair access to the handicapped compartment of local train stations.

The Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has also in an effort invited tenders for this study at some locations such as Central and Western Railway which falls under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP)-3A. “For past many years, we have been working on this to increase the amenities for PSDs to make the suburban railway station disable friendly. The study which will take place will be very helpful in deciding facilities that should be provided,” stated a Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) official.

A recent example of this disable friendly upgradation can be noticed in Churchgate station which has been settled with various amenities in the year 2019 with the help of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds. This is a great step initiated by the railway department to provide complete relief for people with disabilities.
