On Wednesday at the Mumbai Central Metro Station, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) made its 42nd and final tunnel breakthrough on the Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Metro 3 corridor. Tansa-1, a Robbins-built Tunnel Boring Machine, completed its 837-meter, up-line drive from Mumbai Central Metro Station to Mahalaxmi Metro Station in 243 days utilising 558 concrete rings. One of the longest stretches of the line-3 corridor, package 3 of the civil construction includes the metro stations of Mumbai Central, Mahalaxmi, Science Museum, Acharya Atre Chowk, and Worli.
"Today's final advancement was something I watched with tremendous joy. The Metro 3 corridor has now been completely tunnelled. According to Ms. Ashwini Bhide, Managing Director, MMRC, "tunnelling beneath Mumbai's heritage precincts, in close proximity to ancient decaying buildings, existing Metro line, railway lines, water bodies with various and often severe geological conditions has been a daunting task.
Without endangering worker safety, we employed cutting-edge technology. Mumbai residents should be able to commute quickly, comfortably, and safely, according to MMRC Director of Projects Subodh K. Gupta. The project is 76.6% complete overall, and the entire 33.5 km of the 54.5 km tunnelling scope has been completed. The Free Press Journal reported last week that the MMRC had made the final advancement in just one week.
