The bus operating agency of Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) has deployed card readers, allowing passengers to tap on and off the bus for the first time in India. On April 20, the BEST Undertaking made this service available to tens of thousands of customers travelling on the Churchgate-Gateway of India route on bus number 112.

According to the plan, the BEST will only operate on this route for the first week, and card readers have been put in two buses. The BEST will first serve bus routes in south Mumbai, including Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Churchgate, Nariman Point, and Colaba, among other districts, where some of these buses would be equipped with card readers.

"We want to see how people react to it and identify any potential issues, therefore it will be available on bus route number 112." We will begin operations in south Mumbai and progressively expand to other parts of the city. "These automobile readers will be deployed in at least 1000 buses in the next three months," said Lokesh Chandra, General Manager, BEST Undertaking.

Passengers will be able to scan tickets using the Chalo App and the NCMC card. They will have the option of printing a paper ticket or simply tapping their card against the card reader. Conductors and ground ticket checking staff will be on the road for the first several days to help passengers, investigate concerns, and resolve issues.

Officials claim that tapping against the card reader and proceeding will take less than a second. When the NCMC card is tapped, the card reader will also print tickets. Passengers on these buses may 'tap in' and 'tap out' as they board and de-board the bus, giving them a digital experience.

The cost will be automatically computed and deducted based on the distance traveled. This tap-in tap-out system is also available to Super Saver plan and bus pass subscribers. Passengers who pay with an app or a card will be able to ride these all-digital buses. So far, the Chalo App has had 12 lakh downloads and 2 lakh bus passes, with the BEST anticipating 60 lakh digital bus travels in April.
