The BMC has formed a task force to guarantee that the much-anticipated Centre for Children with Special Needs in Byculla is built as soon as possible. According to the local council, all medical facilities and therapies would be provided to children with physical or medical needs.
In January, the
BMC announced the establishment of an early intervention and rehabilitation centre for disadvantaged children in its 2022-23 budget, allocating Rs 5 crore to the project. The institution, which will be built on a 36,000 square-foot plot at BMC's Nagpada-Byculla clinic, will be Mumbai's first of its type for children with various disabilities. ENT, paediatrics, psychiatry, orthopaedics, and speech therapy will be among the clinical departments housed here.
The centre will be located on the dispensary's second, third, and fourth floors, with infrastructure and other processes already underway. Officials stated that they are still deciding which agencies would be included. Suresh Kakani, the city's Additional Municipal Commissioner for Health, said the city has organized a task force led by BYL Nair Hospital that will make all decisions on the centre.
"It is a fantastic project for children with diverse physical and mental disabilities, such as Down's Syndrome, disability, autism, and cerebral palsy," he stated. There will also be a three-tiered structure. The hospital will have permanent staff, as well as visiting professionals from Nair Hospital and honorary visiting consultants, doctors, and therapists."
According to a doctor from BYL Nair Hospital's mental department, it is a rehabilitation centre for children who have already been diagnosed with difficulties. The change has been hailed by health experts as a gift for both youngsters and their parents.
