BMC: Mumbai has water stock till April 2022 as the water level at lakes crosses 70%
On Wednesday, the city of Mumbai crossed its water levels in seven lakes providing drinking water to 70 percent, because of the heavy rains from the past two weeks. At present, the city has a water stock of around 260 days that will last till April 2022. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) official’s stated that there seem to be more chances of no water cuts this year, though it will continue monitoring rainfall throughout August.

“If the total lake level is more than 85 to 90 percent then it is considered to be safe even 70% is safe, but we also need to have rainfall in August to not have any water cuts,” said the official. At the beginning of the month on July 17, the overall water level in seven lakes was just 17% noticing this the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was going to declare a water cut but on July 22 the water level crossed the 50 percent mark and on July 24 it went up to 60 percent and 70 percent on July 28. Last year on July 28 the water level in these seven lakes was 32 percent.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) provides 3,850 million litres of water daily with the city’s demand for 4,200 million litres. As the city was facing a shortfall in drinking water the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was looking for different ways to increase the water supply in the city. A memorandum of understanding was signed by the civic authority with an Israel-based firm for the city’s first desalination project at Manori in Malad. The plan of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) under this project is to convert seawater into drinking water, and the pilot project is expected to be completed by 2025.
