BMC: Mumbai has more than 290 spots prone to landslides
140 accidents of landslides have been noticed in the city of Mumbai since 2013 and these accidents have been rising in the past few years. After the landslides in Vikhroli and Mahul this year 29 people died. There are more than 290 spots in the city that are inclined to landslides in the Eastern suburbs. In the years 2000 and 2005, the city of Mumbai saw a huge number of deaths due to landslides. In the year 2000 on July 12, 67 people were killed when more than 100 huts were crushed in a landslide at Azadnagar in Ghatkopar. In 2005 rain, 78 people died in Sakinaka. 
 
The deaths due to the landslides were fewer in the past but with time passing the number of landslide incidents seems to be increasing. A meeting on this issue took place on Friday of all the authorities. The Additional Commissioner of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and COF of the Disaster Management Authority Ashwini Bhide had asked the officials to make sure that strict implementation is taken in the areas where landslides could occur in the future. She added that there should be regular checking of these prone spots. 
 
The meeting was attended by Central Railway and Western Railway authorities, The Indian Navy, National Disaster Response Authority, The Indian Meteorological Department, Mumbai City, and Mumbai Suburban Collectorate. A suggestion of providing temporary shelters to the people who are willing to move out of their homes in case of warnings.
