The Eknath Shinde-led government has lifted all COVID-19 restrictions on festivals in the state, thus planning for the annual Mount Mary fair, which runs from September 11 to 18, is well underway. Gokulashtami was recently warmly observed throughout the city, and Ganesh mandals are already busy erecting their pandals in preparation for the first major celebration in three years.

During the fair, a lot of booths are set up around the Mount Mary Church in Bandra (West), and the BMC has started accepting bids. The city body has launched bidding for the 20 stalls closest to the church, upping their basic price from Rs 84,000 to Rs 97,000, as it did every year before the pandemic. Many of these stalls used to be sold for more than Rs 1 lakh. These stalls are only allowed to sell religious literature and other related products.

The base fee for the other 400 stalls was also increased by the BMC from Rs 1,800 to Rs 2,250. At least one lakh people visit the Mount Mary fair, commonly known as the Bandra fair, every day. The fair has previously featured up to 430 booths selling candles, flowers, food, toys, and fake jewellery.

The Bombay High Court has issued rules for the stalls. In light of this, the BMC has reserved 260 stalls for neighbourhood residents and permitted outsiders to bid on the remaining spaces. The competitive bidding generates more than Rs30 lakh in revenue for the BMC each year.

Vinayak Vispute, an Assistant Municipal Commissioner, said: "To ensure a smooth celebration of the fair, we will meet with the police and the leadership of the church. Additionally, we are patching potholes and fixing roads. Booths will be erected to facilitate communication between the BMC and the police."
