The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena is not holding an exam to select its candidates for the upcoming civic body polls scheduled to take place in February 2017, as they are facing lack of candidates who are willing to stand for the polls.

MNS leader Shalini Thackeray has, however, denied this claim. “We have no dearth of candidates and can fight the BMC polls comfortably.” She also confirmed the decision of scrapping the exam. “We are not holding any exam this year.

The zonal functionaries are sending a list of probable candidates to the party leadership. We are following a fair and transparent mechanism to select candidates using internal party mechanisms. Rajsaheb will take a call on all the candidates,” she said.

Sitting corporators and strong candidates have also been given the go-ahead to start campaigning.

“If an exam is held this year, it will backfire. There won’t be enough aspirants and the party will be left red-faced. Even if some candidates appear and then fail, who will the party field in the end? Due to reservation and delimitation, all the parties are struggling to find candidates. In this scenario, if they hold exams, it will be impossible to find takers,” said a political observer.

MNS had conducted an exam before the 2012 civic elections in which as many as 600 aspirants had cleared the exam. Those who passed the exam were then interviewed by Raj Thackeray. Only those who fared well in the exam were finally given a ticket.

In the past few months, close to half a dozen corporators from MNS have shifted loyalities to either the Sena or the BJP.

With the party down in the dumps, Raj had decided to step in and campaign for the party himself. “I will visit all the shakhas and see what is happening. Don’t worry or think about who is allying with whom, or whether our own party is forming an alliance or not. Leave that to me. Just work for the people,” Thackeray reportedly told a gathering in September. Now, his expectations have fallen too.
