After March 2024, the journey time between Mumbai and Delhi will be decreased by more than 33% in the future years. On Sunday, a railway official stated, "Railway targets to complete the up-gradation of Mumbai Delhi routes up to 160 kmph by March 2024."
Rajdhani is now the quickest express train between Mumbai and Delhi, traversing 1,386 kilometres in 15 hours and 40 minutes at an average speed of 89 kilometres per hour. "On Saturday, VK Tripathi, the Railway Board's CEO and Chairman assessed the project's development. "During the evaluation, concerned officials informed him that this project will be completed by March 2024," said a WR official who attended the Saturday meeting.
The project is being carried out under the auspices of the 'Misson Raftar,' which is currently in full swing. 42 of the 56 tenders have been finalized, with 14 more to be finalized soon, according to a WR officer. "Increasing the speed of the Mumbai-Delhi segment to 160 kmph will result in a 60% rise in passenger train average speed and a doubling of freight traffic average speed," an official said.
On a daily basis, the Delhi-Mumbai line sees roughly 90 passenger rail services and an equivalent number of freight trains. "Once this route is upgraded to 160 kilometres per hour, additional passenger trains will be able to operate in this stretch." This would minimize passenger wait times on some of the most popular trains because many additional services with similar amenities will be available," an official said.
Railway officials estimate that 25% of passengers will prefer to travel the Rajdhani after the project is completed since the train will allow them to stay connected to the internet at all times. The role of WR in the project's execution is critical because it covers the longest section (almost half) of the Mumbai-Delhi line, from Mumbai Central to Nagda. "Increasing the route's maximum speed will improve the likelihood of the installation of semi-high-speed trains like the Vande Bharat express, allowing such trains to reach their full speed of 160 kmph," an official said.
