The state Legislative Council was notified on Tuesday by Maharashtra Minister Jayant Patil that the
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has not undertaken adequate water recycling projects, resulting in 4 TMC water not being redirected to the drought-prone Marathwada region. MLC Vikram Kale called the notice of the State's Water Resources Minister.
"The Municipal Corporation in Mumbai does not have enough recycling plants, therefore 4 TMC water from the Vaitarna dam cannot be redirected to Marathwada. Once these plants are up and running, some water can be delivered to Marathwada "Patil explained. The minister went on to say that the Union government has pushed on a water-sharing agreement between Gujarat and Maharashtra from the Tapi river.
"The Gujarat administration, on the other hand, does not accept Maharashtra's demand for 15 TMC of water from the projected Ukai dam in Gujarat. As a result, we have decided not to proceed with this agreement "he stated In the meantime, the state government is working on canal diversion projects to boost water storage capacity, according to Patil.
The plains of Marathwada are more widespread in Peninsular India's interior. There is no big river that runs through the area. The region is remote from both the western and eastern coasts, and the Western Ghats' mountainous terrain limits weather activity, leaving little for Marathwada and the rest of Peninsular India.
Providing a Jal Dooth is a nice first step, but it is not a long-term answer. Because the region lacks direct access to rivers, canals will be beneficial. Direct canals are not a suitable option due to the region's climate, as the water dries up quickly in the summer. To some extent, the concept of enclosed canals is beneficial.
In addition, the majority of the farmers in the area grow water-intensive crops like sugar cane. The farming community must become more aware of the need to move away from these types of water-intensive crops. The region's green cover should improve. Direct planting may not be feasible at this time. For cattle rearing, tiny plants and grass are preferable. This will improve green cover while also providing an additional source of income for farmers.
