A massive fire broke out on the fourth floor of the 143 year old Metro House building, a residential and commercial building around 4 pm in Colaba. An interruption to water supply to the fire hydrants saw the situation escalating, with the fire spreading to other floors of the building.

The residents were evacuated and no one was injured. It took 18 fire engines and 11 water tankers to finally control the fire. Chief Fire Officer P Rahangdale said the building was in a precarious condition. The fire was confined to the fourth floor of the building till 6 pm. However, water supply to the hydrants was interrupted for close to half an hour, which aggravated the fire.

Makarand Narvekar, local corporator, said “The hydrants are not working and some of them are buried under the footpath. We have taken up the issue many times but the BMC and the fire department have not addressed it.”
