Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, on Sunday, extended his congratulations to Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan after he was declared as the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) official nominee for the upcoming Vice Presidential election. According to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), Fadnavis, immediately after returning from Kolhapur, headed straight to Raj Bhavan to personally meet Governor Radhakrishnan and convey his best wishes.

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde also came forward to announce full support from his party, the Shiv Sena, for Radhakrishnan’s candidature. Shinde hailed the decision as a mark of respect for Radhakrishnan’s long-standing integrity, wisdom, and political experience. Expressing his sentiments in a social media post, Shinde remarked that by nominating the Maharashtra Governor for the Vice Presidential role, the NDA under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has honoured an honest, patriotic, and seasoned personality. He highlighted Radhakrishnan’s distinguished parliamentary background as a Member of Parliament and his strong administrative acumen as a Governor. Shinde further added that given the consensus around his candidature, his victory was almost assured, and he extended best wishes for a successful and impactful term as Vice President, contributing to the nation’s bright future.

The NDA officially announced Radhakrishnan’s candidature earlier in the day. The announcement came through BJP national president J.P. Nadda following the Parliamentary Board meeting in New Delhi. Addressing the media, Nadda stated that after internal discussions and consultations with alliance partners, the board unanimously selected Radhakrishnan as the Vice Presidential candidate. He also mentioned that the party would engage with opposition parties as well to ensure a smooth election process. The Vice Presidential election is scheduled for September 9.

C.P. Radhakrishnan, aged 67, has had a long and diverse political journey. His involvement with public life began at a young age, being associated with organisations like the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Jan Sangh. Active in student politics during the early years, he gradually rose through the ranks, dedicating his life to public service and social reform. Over the last four decades, he has been at the forefront of several political and social movements, consistently advocating for national integration, welfare initiatives, and grassroots development.

He first tasted electoral success in 1998 when he was elected as a Member of Parliament from Coimbatore, winning with a significant margin of over 1.5 lakh votes. He repeated his victory in 1999 from the same constituency. His political rise continued as he served in various capacities, including secretary of the BJP in Tamil Nadu in 1996 and later as the state party president in 2006, where he vocally raised issues concerning social development and state welfare. Between 2016 and 2020, he served as chairman of the Coir Board, where his leadership brought the Indian coir industry to unprecedented heights, recording exports worth ₹2,532 crore, the highest in history.

Radhakrishnan has also held several high constitutional positions. He has served as Governor of Jharkhand, Telangana, Maharashtra, and also as Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry. During his tenure as Governor of Jharkhand, he made remarkable efforts to engage directly with citizens by visiting all 24 districts within just four months. His focus on tuberculosis eradication in Jharkhand, Maharashtra, and Puducherry was widely acknowledged.

His political journey reflects his versatility and commitment. Beginning in 1974 as a State Executive Committee member of the Jan Sangh, he went on to become a prominent BJP leader in Tamil Nadu, an MP, and later an influential organisational leader. He has been part of several important delegations, including the parliamentary team to the United Nations in 2004 and the first Indian parliamentary delegation to Taiwan in 2014. His consistent work earned him recognition as a leader free from any legal taint, known for his dedication and honesty.

Born on October 20, 1957, in Tiruppur district of Tamil Nadu, Radhakrishnan is both an agriculturist and an industrialist by profession. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from V.O.C. College, Tuticorin. His simple yet effective approach to governance and his deep knowledge of grassroots issues have made him a respected figure in Indian politics.

With over four decades of service, C.P. Radhakrishnan brings with him a rich blend of political wisdom and administrative expertise. His nomination for the Vice Presidency is seen as not just a recognition of his individual achievements but also as a statement of the NDA’s trust in his ability to uphold the dignity and responsibility of the second-highest constitutional office in India. If elected, his term is expected to leave a significant imprint on the nation’s democratic fabric, blending experience with integrity.
