Maharashtra Panchayat Election Results: NCP, BJP both case to be single-greatest party in rural body polls

MUMBAI: State Minister Jayant Patil claimed that the NCP has won 3,276 Gram Panchayats, the highest by a party.  The opposition BJP claimed to have won more than 6,000 gram panchayats.  Leader and state minister Jayant Patil on Tuesday claimed that the NCP had won 3,276 gram panchayats across Maharashtra in the village council elections. State Cabinet Minister Jayant Patil claimed that the NCP has won 3,276 Gram Panchayats, the highest by a party.  The opposition BJP claimed to have won 6,000 gram panchayats. 

Voting for 14,000 Gram Panchayats in 34 districts took place on Friday.  On Monday, 1.25 lakh candidates won.Panchayat voting is not fought over party symbols, but panels consisting of candidates are presented by political parties or local leaders.  The NCP has won 3,276 Gram Panchayats and the Congress 1,938, Maharashtra NCP president Patil told reporters.  The BJP got 2,942 and the Shiv Sena 2,406.

The Water Resources Minister claimed that the BJP did not get even 20 per cent of the seats as compared to the ruling MahaVikasAgadi allies Shiv Sena, Congress and NCP. Earlier, Maharashtra BJP chief spokesperson KeshavUpadhyay had said that the party had won more than 6,000 Gram Panchayats. 

We have won 6,000 gram panchayats ... We are talking on the basis of statistics.  Speaking to reporters, Upadhyay claimed that the BJP is the number one party in the state.
