Yesterday, Maharashtra Environment Minister Aditya Thackeray met with the International Baccalaureate (IB) board to discuss how to promote quality and equality in education by giving students in BMC schools the choice of choosing between other education boards. The IB board members conducted a virtual meeting with Aditya Thackeray and discussed extending the IB curriculum to BMC schools. "This morning, we held an engagement with the IB Board for its PYP (Primary Years Programme), MYP (Middle Years Programme), and DP (Diploma Programme) at BMC schools," Aditya Thackeray wrote in a tweet. To promote excellence and equality in education, we want our kids to have the alternatives of SSC, CBSE, ICSE, Cambridge, and IB."
"The range of boards of education will let families choose BMC schools to give wings to their children's goals and ambitions," he added, "with all of them having free education for pupils and also teaching the Marathi language up to 10th." The IB board wrote to Aditya Thackeray a week ago, saying that now is the right time for BMC schools and government schools in Maharashtra to adopt the IB framework for their state board schools, which would help them meet global standards while also aligning with the National Education Policy of India 2020. (NEP 2020). They also cited their different education programmes, such as PYP, MYP, and DP, in the letter.
The International Baccalaureate (IB) is a global organisation that collaborates with governments and universities to develop programmes for students aged 3 to 19. Aditya Thackeray had declared earlier this month, when inaugurating a new BMC school, that the BMC would create IB schools in the future, with kids receiving free education in such facilities. Thackeray had previously claimed that the CBSE board has granted accreditation to 11 BMC schools.
