Cold wave conditions grip Maharashtra as well, with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting a cold wave for the next 48 hours in north-central Maharashtra, Marathwada, and other portions of the state. The meteorological agency predicts a further drop in temperature in Mumbai and surrounding areas in the following days.
"The temperature in many parts of the state has dipped since Sunday," Sushma Nair, an IMD scientist, said. "There is a strong likelihood of a cold day, cold wave conditions over North-Central Maharashtra and Marathwada, as well as other places in the state, after the western disturbance passed by the Maharashtra coast."
A "cold day," as per the IMD, is one with a minimum temperature of less than 10 degrees Celsius and a maximum temperature of at least 4.5 degrees Celsius below average. "A cold front from the northern plains has made its way deep into Madhya Maharashtra. The twin cities of Pune and Nashik are reeling under the effects of a cold wave. The region has been ravaged by bitter cold, which was generally absent in December.
Extremely low temperatures have now blanketed the region. Although there are few exceptions, both cities have a history of temperatures dropping to 4-6°C in January. Meanwhile, the Delhi base station recorded a low of 6.2°C today, while the airport observatory Palam reported 7.4°C" Skymet Weather, a private weather forecaster, claimed specialists. "Icy northerly winds have pushed deep south, up to Madhya Maharashtra, travelling past the frigid plains of South Rajasthan," Skymet added.
The Santacruz observatory of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded a minimum temperature of 15 degrees Celsius and a maximum temperature of 23.8 degrees Celsius on Monday. During the same time, the Colaba observatory recorded a minimum temperature of 16.2 degrees Celsius and a maximum temperature of 24 degrees Celsius. On Tuesday, the minimum temperature dropped even lower.
