Days after the Supreme Court ordered the Maha Vikas Aghadi administration to submit all relevant data and information on Other Backward Classes (OBCs), Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray met with key ministers on Monday to assess the situation and make plans for the next hearing on February 8.
According to the apex court's order, the state government has already forwarded data and information on OBC compiled by the Maharashtra State Backward Classes Commission (MSBCC) and the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics to the current MSBCC, which is chaired by Justice (retired) AV Nirgude. The government has requested that the Justice Nirgude-led Commission verify the OBC data and information and submit it as soon as possible.
Following the highest court's judgement, the state administration breathed a sign of relief, since if it accepts the data and information reviewed by the MSBCC, it may lead to the interim reinstatement of OBCs' 27 percent political reservation in local bodies.
"It was decided to urge the MSBCC, led by Justice Nirgude, to verify the data and information prepared by the earlier Commission, led by Justice (retired) MG Gaikwad, and forward it to the government, so that it can be submitted to the apex court during the next hearing on February 8," a senior minister said. He went on to say that the Justice Gaikwad-led Commission prepared the data and statistics for the Maratha quota.
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, Food and Civil Supply Minister Chhagan Bhujbal, who is also the founder of the Samata Parishad, Urban Development Minister Eknath Shinde, Legislative Affairs Minister Anil Parab, and Minister of OBC Vijay Wadettiwar are among the senior ministers.
Another minister stated that the state government has also sent data to the Justice Nirgude-led Commission on OBC education scholarships and students seeking higher education. Meanwhile, Mrunal Dhole Patil, the convener of the OBC Movement, said the government must embrace the chance and submit the reports to the Supreme Court, or face the wrath of the OBC community.
