The Maharashtra Government requested the Centre to introduce a Constitutional amendment to permit Maratha Quota on the lines of 10% economically weaker section (EWS), soon after Supreme Court unsanctioned to re- examine it. In its response the Maratha Kranti Morcha (MKM) stated that they will keep on fighting up until their request for reservation is granted.
Former Home Minister and Opposition Leader Devendra Fadnavis advised that the State Government proclaim Marathas as backward class community by the backward classes commission put forward the plan to the Centre for further process. The verdict was refused by the SC on Thursday to re-examine the Maratha Quota and the petition was also dismissed.
“Now it has become very clear that the state is left with no rights hence the Centre should revise the Constitution to grant Maratha Reservation, on the lines of EWS Quota, It is very crucial blow to the Maratha quota issue. Although we will not politicize the issue. The centre must take a decision and grant reservation” said Ashok Chavan, State PWD Minister and Chairperson of the State Cabinet Sub- committee for Maratha Quota.
The Former Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis too advised the State look into the matter and forward it to the Centre. “The state should declare the Maratha community as backward and send the proposal to the Centre for the last minute process without any further delay” said Former Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
Earlier this month the Supreme Court squashed the Maratha Reservation that was granted in the state of Maharashtra. The Supreme Court went on to say that there is no need to reconsider the earlier nine judge constitutional bench order judgement, which had put a 50% sealing on the reservation. The Supreme Court also stated that the sates do have the right to look at certain exceptional circumstances under which socially and economically backward communities can be given reservation in the state. However, the Maratha Community does not qualify in that category.
