The Maharashtra Government has approved the establishment of new 12 Primary to Higher Secondary Schools on Self Financed Basis run by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to start CBSE/CISCE courses for students from underprivileged backgrounds in the city, amid a war of words between the BJP and Shiv Sena Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray over the closure of Marathi schools in Mumbai.

The government resolution stating that permission has been given under the Maharashtra Self Finance Schools (Establishment and Regulations) Rules, 2012 for the academic year 2022–2023 was published on Tuesday by the department of school education and sports' Deputy Secretary, Mr. Sameer Sawant. According to a government resolution, the state government will not give these schools any grants or other forms of direct or indirect financial support because permission to open them on a self-supporting basis has already been granted.

These institutions must closely adhere to the rules and regulations outlined under the Maharashtra Right to Free and Compulsory Education of Women Rules, 2011, and the Right to Free and Compulsory Education of Women Act, both of which were passed in 2009. The Maharashtra Self-Finance Schools  (Establishment and Regulation) Rules, 2012 as well as any additional directives issued by the government in addition to the rules and any terms or conditions outlined in the circular, will also need to be followed by these schools.

According to the government's instructions, it will be necessary for candidates for the CBSE/CISCE Board to obtain a current certificate from the government. In addition, the government has authorised the upgrading of Secondary and Higher Secondary Classes on a Self Financed Basis at 9 Schools run by Amaravati Municipal Corporation, Amaravati.
