On Monday, the government of Maharashtra declared that the 812 acres of Aarey milk colony land, Aarey land in Borivali, Marol Maroshi village and Goregaon have officially been handed over to the Forest department of State and Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP).
Last year in September, Maharashtra government had decided to apply section 4 of Indian forest act to the land which declared as a reserved forest. Earlier, the land was with the Dairy Development Department. State environment minister, Aditya Thackeray tweeted, “Good news for Mumbai and forest has been officially taken over today from Aarey department by Maharashtra Forest department. Its officially under the control of Indian forest act under section 4 now.” According to the green activists, this move will stop the struggle against the Metro car shed proposed in Aarey colony.
