Low ridership in local trains for the fifth consecutive day in Mumbai

It has been five days that the Maharashtra Government has permitted commuters to travel to the local trains. The response in these five days have been recorded, which shows that the numbers of people travelling in the local trains have not noticed any significant increase. The speculations of two reasons are being given for low response, firstly, that the people had demanded issuance of single-journey tickets and the resuming of main line suburban MEMU trains of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) between Diva-Panvel and Vasai. The total number of citizens who have been travelling remains between 32 lakhs and 35 lakhs in the past five days.

The two demands have been raised by the commuters residing in Dahanu to the local members of the Parliament and Minister of State for Panchayati Raj, Kapil Patil. A commuter in response to the low numbers of travellers stated that “Till the railways do not look into the two issues which have been raised by the commuters, the number will not rise. Some commuters are mainline as they are from far off suburbs, they are suffering the most. By taking a monthly season pass, commuters are stuck with one single corridor and are limited in the commute. It will be a great relief if the railways resume operations of MEMU trains.”
