In the past 4 years, only 16 percent of new sewerage lines laid in Mumbai

In the past four years, only 16 percent of the work of laying new sewerage lines across the city was completed. A target of completing the construction of 93.68 km of sewer lines under the Municipal Sewerage Improvement Project (MSIP) was decided by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). This target was set for the areas which were formed or redeveloped in recent years.

But, the pace seems to be slow as in the past four years only 15.5 km of work has been completed, responding to which the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) stated that the remaining work will be completed by them in the coming 2 years. To cover the whole island city and suburbs with 100 percent sewer connectivity, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has prepared a plan for sewerage infrastructure development, stated an affidavit filed before the Supreme Court under the Municipal Sewerage Improvement Project (MSIP).

“We are looking forward to complete this work in two years, that is by 2023. The reason for the delay in the work was due to the pandemic. That’s the reason why there was very little progress in the last two years,” stated a senior official from the Department of Sewerage Project. According to the records of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the city of Mumbai generates a total of 2,190 million litres of sewage daily.
