674 schools in Maharashtra have been determined to be unlicensed, with 238 of them in Mumbai alone. The education department has 16 schools (schools connected with CBSE, ICSE, or any other board) and the BMC department has 222 schools (State Board Schools).

The unapproved school list is based on data from the state government's Unified District Information System for Education (U-DISE), which shows that these schools have not been approved or recognized by the department of education. These unlicensed schools have not applied for or received approval from the Department of Education, nor have they completed verified paperwork.

Students' unions and parent groups are urging the government to take swift and severe action against these schools. "Students and parents need to be aware of these unlicensed schools," said Amar Ekad, President of the Cops Students' Union. "The list of these schools should be made public on the government's website, and prompt legal action should be taken against the state's 674 unlicensed schools to prevent students from losing their education," he said.

Maharashtra's Education Department may impose severe penalties on unlicensed institutions. Schools must file a self-declaration with the District Education Officer within three months of getting department clearance, ensuring that the school meets all of the standards. If it is run without permission, the school will be subject to legal action under section 18(5) of the Act.

Dinkar Temkar, Maharashtra's Director of Primary Education, remarked, "The department must notify the schools, and if they fail to meet the recognition conditions, action would be taken. We've started the process and informed district education administrators that if the school does not deliver the recognition, severe consequences will be imposed."
