Mumbai: IMD Predicts Rain to Speed up once again from the Weekend
The city of Mumbai can hope for certain comfort from hot and dry weather conditions as the Indian Metrological Department (IMD) has predicted rains to speed up once again from the weekend. Mumbai and Thane are on the yellow alert for Saturday and Sunday as heavy rain may hit.

The weather forecaster stated that this is the consequence of a low-pressure that is expected to form over west-central and adjoining North-West Bay of Bengal through Sunday. Rain was seen in several areas of Mumbai and Thane on Wednesday morning for a short period but swiftly moderated and cloudy skies were seen continuing all through the day.

The IMD Colaba observatory recorded nil rain from 8:30 am - 5:30 pm on Wednesday while The IMD Santacruz observatory recorded 0.9 mm of rain. From June 1 the rains recorded in the state by the IMD Colaba observatory have been 714.6 mm and the IMD Santacruz observatory is 987 mm which is 43. 5 mm and 260.2 mm above normal.

In the meantime, the lakes providing water to Mumbai at present have total water stock of 2.66 lakh million litres or 18.44 percent of the total requirement of stocks. In the past year, it was the same scenario as the total stocks on the same date were around 2.04 lakh million litres.

As far as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is concerned, they already are grappling with the pandemic which is why Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has asked the district level to ensure that they remain on alert. Even the guardian ministers have been asked to try and help out people. The BMC on this part stated that if required in low line areas they will have to evacuate people.

The weather forecast states that Mumbai and parts of Maharashtra will receive severe rainfall and in that context, the state government has taken certain measures. It has informed and alerted most of its people to make sure that proper measures are taken including the BMC. As BMC works throughout the year on pre-monsoon walks to ensure that during the monsoon Mumbai doesn’t face any problem.
